Keira Knightley had her big break in this film, but Bend it Like Beckham is really the story of Parminder Nagra’s character Jess, a British-born daughter of Sikh parents. Jess's passion for soccer puts her at odds with her parents who, while not hidebound traditionalists, nonetheless think sports are an improper pastime for an almost-grown teenager with marriage and university to think about. Director Chadha acknowledges the inter-generational conflicts, but chooses to go for an uplift resolution, resulting in a film that is packed with energy and warmth.
